A specialist sculptor in the traditional marble workshop particularly skilled at carving hands, one of the most difficult and visually sensitive parts of the human figure.
Scultore di mani literally means “sculptor of hands.” The specialization is explicitly recorded in the Pietrasanta workshop vocabulary documented by Le voci del marmo.
In large ateliers, highly skilled artisans could become known for particular anatomical passages. Hands demand structure, gesture, proportion, delicacy, and technical control, making them a natural area of specialization.
Etymology
Italian: scultore, “sculptor,” + di mani, “of hands.”
Sculptor Notes
The existence of a specialist hand sculptor is a reminder that historic and modern marble production may involve many highly trained hands. Attribution of a sculpture to an artist does not necessarily mean every passage was physically carved by that artist.
