The drilling operation used during roughing to create measured holes for splitting, reference work, dowels, or removal of stone.
Foratura means drilling. In the roughing sequence documented by Le voci del marmo, measured locations are drilled before splitting devices are inserted and a portion of marble is detached.
Etymology
From Italian forare, “to bore or drill.”
Sculptor Notes
A drilled hole is rarely an isolated act. Its location, diameter, direction, and depth should be planned according to what follows—splitting, pinning, anchoring, or removing a controlled volume of stone.
