Language Origin

Italian

Pronunciation

kar-roh-PON-teh

Carroponte is an overhead bridge crane. Le voci del marmo records its use in Pietrasanta workshops specifically for lifting marble blocks.

A carriage travels along an elevated bridge while the bridge itself travels on parallel rails, allowing a suspended load to be moved across much of the workshop floor.

Etymology

Italian compound: carro, “carriage,” + ponte, “bridge.”

Sculptor Notes

Rigging is part of sculpture at monumental scale. The sculptor must think about the center of gravity, sling position, edge protection, safe working load, rotation of the block, and where the stone can be safely set down before a lift begins.
