The prepared bearing plane or base surface on which a sculpture stands during carving or in its final position.
Piano di appoggio is the support plane or bearing surface of the sculpture. Le voci del marmo includes the creation of the sculpture’s support plane or base as a distinct operation during roughing.
Etymology
Italian: piano, “plane,” + appoggio, “support or bearing.”
Sculptor Notes
The base plane is a geometric reference as well as a physical support. If it is inaccurate, every later vertical, height measurement, and installation relationship may inherit the error.
