Difficulty

Intermediate

Language Origin

Italian

Pronunciation

skool-TOO-rah LEE-beh-rah

Scultura libera is the term used by Le voci del marmo in contrast with sculpture executed from a 1:1 model. It describes carving that is not governed by systematic point transfer from a full-size model.

Etymology

Italian: scultura, “sculpture,” + libera, “free.”

Sculptor Notes

Scultura libera should not be confused with lack of planning. A sculptor may work from drawings, a small bozzetto, measurements, anatomical knowledge, or direct judgment while still allowing decisions to emerge within the stone itself.
