Short Definition

Difficulty

Intermediate

Language Origin

Italian

Pronunciation

loo-chee-dah-TOO-rah

Lucidatura is the polishing stage of marble finishing. Le voci del marmo describes a traditional method using a damp hemp or jute pad with oxalic acid to bring the marble surface to maximum brilliance.

Lucidatura follows successful levigatura; polishing cannot conceal deep scratches left in earlier stages.

Etymology

From Italian lucidare, “to polish or make bright.”

Sculptor Notes

Gloss is a design decision. Highly polished flesh, drapery, hair, and architectural passages reflect light differently, so selective polishing can organize the visual hierarchy of a sculpture.
