Language Origin

Italian

Pronunciation

SKWAH-drah TSOHP-pah

The ordinary squadra is an L-shaped square essential for preparing blocks and checking right angles. Le voci del marmo records a regional Apuan–Versilian variant called the squadra zoppa, fitted with a movable arm held by a clamp so that different angles can be set.

Etymology

Italian: squadra, “square,” + zoppa, literally “lame”; regional workshop name for the adjustable form.

Sculptor Notes

This is a particularly valuable regional shop term. The adjustable arm allows an angle to be taken from one form and transferred directly to another without reducing the operation to numerical degrees.
