A computer-controlled machine used to remove stone according to digital coordinates or toolpaths, including roughing operations in contemporary marble sculpture workshops.
Macchina a controllo numerico is the Italian term for a numerically controlled machine, commonly CNC. Le voci del marmo documents CNC roughing and examples of sculpture produced with numerically controlled machinery.
Etymology
Italian: macchina a controllo numerico, “numerically controlled machine.”
Sculptor Notes
CNC can establish an accurate envelope or near-final geometry, but it does not eliminate decisions about tool access, stone defects, surface character, finishing, or the sculptor's intended relation between machine work and hand work.
