A flexible abrasive sheet used in progressively finer grades to smooth marble surfaces during levigatura.
Carta abrasiva is abrasive paper used during levigatura. The Pietrasanta demonstrations documented by Le voci del marmo show abrasive paper as part of the progressive surface-finishing sequence.
Etymology
Italian: carta, “paper,” + abrasiva, “abrasive.”
Sculptor Notes
The grit number matters less than the sequence: each grade must erase the previous scratch pattern before the sculptor moves finer.
