A powered angle grinder used in marble carving with abrasive or diamond discs for cutting, flattening, shaping, and finishing broad surfaces.
Smerigliatrice angolare is the formal Italian term for an angle grinder. Le voci del marmo documents its use in finishing broad planes of marble.
Etymology
Italian: smerigliare, “to grind or abrade,” + angolare, “angular.”
Sculptor Notes
The angle grinder is extremely efficient but visually unforgiving. On sculpture it should follow form rather than flatten it accidentally; broad planes must remain intentional planes, not machine scars.
