In an Italian stone workshop, lama refers to the cutting blade used on sawing machinery for reducing or sectioning marble.
Lama means blade. The term appears among the workshop machinery identified in the Giorgio Angeli interview indexed by Le voci del marmo.
In marble work, a blade may be associated with bridge saws and other machines used to section blocks, establish planes, or remove large areas of waste.
Etymology
Italian lama, “blade.”
Sculptor Notes
For sculptural work the important distinction is between cutting a safe boundary into waste and allowing the machine to define the final form. A saw cut is fast and exact, but it is also unforgiving.
