Tabularasa

Specialist supplier for sculptors, mosaic artists, and stone workers

Tabularasa is a specialist supplier for sculptors, mosaic artists, and stone workers, with a dedicated showroom in the historic center of Carrara. Rather than functioning as a general hardware store, it is focused on the tools and materials used in actual sculpture practice: hand chisels, pneumatic tools, carving sets, abrasives, diamond tools, grinders, drills, polishing equipment, small stone blocks, and mosaic materials. Its catalog includes both traditional steel carving tools and contemporary carbide and diamond systems.

For a sculptor, this is the kind of store where the vocabulary of the workshop becomes physical. You can find tools such as subbie, gradine, hand chisels, pneumatic chisels, rasps, carving hammers, diamond burrs, grinding and polishing systems, as well as specialist equipment such as the Frullo smodellatore. The company also carries complete carving sets from manufacturers including Milani, Cuturi, and F+K.

Tabularasa also has a strong connection to mosaic work, carrying marble tesserae, smalti, mosaic cutters, hardies, and associated materials, so it serves a broader community of stone-based artists in addition to sculptors.

Visiting notes
The Carrara showroom is in the historic center of Carrara, very close to Piazza Duomo and the Accademia di Belle Arti. Tabularasa states that the shop lies between the Duomo and the Academy, in the pedestrian/ZTL area, so if arriving by car it is best to park outside the historic center and walk the final short distance.

For a visiting sculptor, this is more than a place to pick up supplies. It is an opportunity to handle and compare the kinds of tools used by Carrara carvers: different chisel steels, carbide tools, pneumatic shanks, diamond shapes, abrasives, and polishing systems. If you are trying to understand the difference between tools that look similar online, this is exactly the kind of store where seeing them in person becomes useful.
