An angelic order of the second hierarchy, traditionally associated with divine strength and, in some theological accounts, miraculous operations in the created world.
Virtues are the middle order of the second hierarchy. Their name should not be confused with moral virtues. Medieval writers associate this angelic order with a particular excellence of divine strength and, in some accounts, with miraculous operations.
Etymology
From Latin virtutes, “powers, excellences, strengths.”
Sculptor Notes
Because the English word “virtue” has strong moral associations, labels or inscriptions are often necessary when the term is used iconographically. Avoid inventing a standardized attribute where historical evidence does not support one.
