Thrones

One of the nine angelic orders and the lowest order of the first hierarchy; medieval theology associates Thrones with divine judgment and receptivity to God's rule.

Short Definition

The angelic order called Thrones, belonging to the first hierarchy.

Difficulty

Intermediate

Language Origin

Greek / Latin / English

Pronunciation

THROHNZ

Thrones are the third order of the first hierarchy in the traditional nine choirs. Aquinas, following Dionysius and Gregory, connects the name with receptivity to divine judgment and governance.

In later visual traditions Thrones are sometimes associated with fiery wheels or wheel-like celestial forms, but these should not automatically be equated with the biblical Ophanim.

Etymology

From Greek thronos and Latin thronus, “seat” or “throne.”

Sculptor Notes

When the order is represented abstractly, circular and wheel-like structures can produce powerful architectural sculpture. Where a program requires historical precision, distinguish the theological order of Thrones from Ezekiel's wheel-beings rather than collapsing the two without qualification.
