The archangel who accompanies Tobias in the Book of Tobit, traditionally associated with healing, travel, protection, and the fish carried by Tobias.
Raphael the Archangel is the heavenly companion of Tobias in the Book of Tobit. The narrative gave Western artists a distinctive iconographic type: Raphael walking beside the young Tobias, often accompanied by a dog and the fish connected with the healing of Tobit.
Etymology
Raphael from Hebrew Refa'el, “God heals.”
Sculptor Notes
Raphael is often best understood through relationship rather than isolated attribute. The guiding hand, shared stride, turned head, and difference in scale can make the protective companionship immediately readable.
