A cross mounted on a staff and carried in liturgical procession, often richly carved, cast, gilded, or ornamented.
A processional cross is mounted on a staff and carried at the head of a liturgical procession. It may be a simple cross or a crucifix and can include figures of Christ, the Virgin, saints, angels, relics, gems, enamel, or chased ornament.
Etymology
Procession from Latin processio, “a going forward”; cross from Latin crux.
Sculptor Notes
A processional work must be designed for motion and distance. Silhouette, two-sided viewing, weight, balance on the staff, structural attachment, and resistance to repeated handling are as important as fine detail.
