The archangel of annunciation and divine message, most famously represented announcing the Incarnation to the Virgin Mary.
Gabriel the Archangel is the messenger who announces the conception of John the Baptist and the Incarnation of Christ. In Western art Gabriel is most strongly identified with the Annunciation to the Virgin.
Etymology
Gabriel from Hebrew Gavri'el, commonly interpreted “God is my strength” or “strength of God.”
Sculptor Notes
Gabriel is typically youthful, winged, and richly draped; the lily, sceptre, scroll, or gesture of address may identify him. In an Annunciation group, his forward motion must be balanced against Mary's receptive or startled response.
