Difficulty

Beginner

Language Origin

French / English

Pronunciation

en-TOOM-ment

The Entombment represents the burial of Christ, usually with Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, the Virgin, Saint John, Mary Magdalene, and other mourners. It follows the Deposition and Lamentation in the Passion sequence.

Etymology

From Old French entomber, “to place in a tomb.”

Sculptor Notes

The horizontal body of Christ often becomes the principal compositional axis. In relief, the sarcophagus or tomb edge can establish a strong architectural baseline against which the figures bend, kneel, and lower the body.
