The broad division of sculpture into relief and sculpture in the round.
In this traditional classification, sculpture is divided into two principal forms: Relief, in which the sculpted forms remain connected to a background plane, and Ronde-bosse, or sculpture in the round, in which the work is developed freely in three dimensions.
