An angel carrying a scroll or ribbon-like band bearing an inscription, prophecy, salutation, or sacred text.
A banderole angel carries a scroll, ribbon, or streamer bearing written words. The device is common in medieval and Renaissance imagery, where angelic speech, prophecy, praise, or the words of the Annunciation can be physically integrated into the composition.
Etymology
From French banderole, “small banner or streamer.”
Sculptor Notes
The banderole is both text and line. Its curves can connect figures, occupy otherwise dead space, and make spoken words visible. In stone, thickness and attachment points must be sufficient to prevent a long curling scroll from becoming structurally vulnerable.
