John Fisher

Profile carving

Fisher describes a technique he calls profile carving, in which the sculptor works progressively along the extreme edge of the emerging form.

Instead of attempting to resolve large surfaces simultaneously, the carving advances one line at a time. Fisher regards this as an efficient and less fatiguing method, rooted in historical stoneworking practice.

His approach challenges dependence on models and mechanical reproduction. For Fisher, a sculpture’s creative potential remains open as long as the artist responds directly to the stone.
