Francesco Galeotti

Studio Galeotti

Biography

Francesco Galeotti was born in Pietrasanta, Italy, in 1970 into a family with several generations of involvement in marble sculpture and stone carving. He continues to live and work in Pietrasanta, one of the historic centers of marble sculpture and artistic craftsmanship in Tuscany.

Galeotti studied at the Istituto d’Arte Stagio Stagi in Pietrasanta, receiving his diploma in Artistic Decoration in 1991. He subsequently attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara, where he graduated from the Sculpture Department with highest marks. His thesis concerned the representation of sport in art.

In 1997 Galeotti completed professional training in the restoration of marble and stone in Carrara. His restoration experience included work associated with the Cathedral and Baptistery of Pisa, and he received certification in the maintenance and conservation of architectural heritage.

He works in both marble and bronze, executing commissions through the sculpture studio that has belonged to his family for generations.

Studio Galeotti

The history of Francesco Galeotti is inseparable from Studio Galeotti.

According to the studio’s own history, generations of the Galeotti family transmitted the skills and knowledge of stone carving from father to son. The family belonged to the tradition of the highly skilled Pietrasanta artigiani-scultori—artisan-sculptors capable both of reproducing historic works and of assisting contemporary artists in realizing sculpture in marble.

The studio, situated against the historic walls of Pietrasanta, represents an important surviving example of the traditional sculpture workshops for which the city became internationally known.

Galeotti grew up within this environment, surrounded by marble dust, plaster casts, carving tools, models, and the accumulated working knowledge of generations of sculptors.

Sculpture

Galeotti’s work is strongly rooted in the figurative and classical tradition. His documented subjects include:

  • the human figure
  • anatomical studies
  • female torsos and heads
  • portrait and figurative heads
  • Bacchus
  • equine sculpture
  • commissioned works in marble and bronze

Among contemporary sculptors associated with Pietrasanta, his work has been described as particularly traditional and technically classical.

Sylacauga Magic of Marble Festival

In 2011 Francesco Galeotti represented Pietrasanta at the Sylacauga Magic of Marble Festival in Alabama, United States.

Pietrasanta has participated in the festival since 2009 by sending an artist or artisan as an artistic ambassador and mentor. The program forms part of a continuing cultural relationship between Pietrasanta and Sylacauga, Alabama, whose locally quarried white marble has its own significant history of sculpture and architectural use.

Galeotti was among the artists later recognized by the Comune di Pietrasanta as part of this continuing exchange.

On September 28, 2026, Galeotti joined other former Pietrasanta representatives—including Giovanni Balderi, Renzo Maggi, Marcello Giorgi, Edi Carrer and Georg Viktor—at the Chiostro di Sant’Agostino during a gathering celebrating the longstanding relationship between Pietrasanta and the Sylacauga festival.

Significance

Francesco Galeotti represents a tradition that occupies an unusual position between the classifications of artist, sculptor, marble carver and artisan.

The historic Pietrasanta workshops depended upon highly accomplished craftsmen capable of translating a sculptor’s model into permanent material while simultaneously possessing a sculptor’s knowledge of anatomy, form, tools, stone, finishing and structural judgment.

Studio Galeotti belongs to this tradition.

For the Sculptors Lexicon, Galeotti is therefore significant not only for his individual sculpture but as a living connection to the workshop culture through which sculptural knowledge has been transmitted in Pietrasanta for generations.
