Language Origin

Pronunciation

YAH-lee

A yali, also called vyala, is a composite mythical creature prominent in South Indian temple sculpture. It commonly combines features of lions, elephants, horses, birds, and other animals and often appears on pillars, pilasters, brackets, and processional structures.

Etymology

South Indian term; also known by the Sanskrit-derived form vyala.

Sculptor Notes

The yali is an excellent example of invention through anatomical fusion. Successful carving makes the hybrid creature feel structurally convincing rather than merely assembled from unrelated animal parts.
