Language Origin

Latin / English

Pronunciation

AYN-jəl of thə PASH-ən

An Angel of the Passion is an angelic figure associated with Christ’s suffering and death. Such angels may carry a cross, lance, sponge, nails, crown of thorns, or other Arma Christi, or may adore the instruments themselves.

Etymology

Passion from Latin passio, “suffering.”

Sculptor Notes

Each instrument changes the pose. A long lance creates a vertical or diagonal axis; a cross creates substantial mass; nails and crown demand close viewing. The attribute should determine the angel's action rather than merely occupy the hand.
