The wheel-like beings of Ezekiel's visions, often described as intersecting wheels full of eyes; later angelological traditions sometimes associate them with the order of Thrones.
Ophanim are the wheel-like beings described in the visions of Ezekiel: extraordinary wheel structures associated with the living creatures and the divine chariot. Later angelological and artistic traditions sometimes connect them with the order of Thrones, but the identification is not simply interchangeable.
Etymology
Hebrew ophannim, plural of ophan, “wheel.”
Sculptor Notes
For a sculptor, Ophanim open a radically non-anthropomorphic vocabulary: rings, intersecting circles, eyes, rotational rhythm, and radiating structure. They are a useful corrective to the assumption that every angel must be carved as a winged human.
