A basin or vessel used for the sacrament of baptism, frequently carved in stone and enriched with figures, animals, foliage, or theological symbolism.
A baptismal font holds the water used in baptism. Monumental fonts are often carved from stone or cast in metal and may carry reliefs of the Baptism of Christ, apostles, animals, rivers of Paradise, foliage, or sacramental symbols.
Etymology
Font from Latin fons, “spring” or “fountain”; baptism from Greek baptizein, “to immerse.”
Sculptor Notes
The font must function as vessel and sculpture. Bowl depth, drainage, cover, rim thickness, access from all sides, and the viewer's downward angle all influence carving. Ornament should respect the continuous mass required to hold water securely.
