The low horizontal base or lower register of an altarpiece, often filled with small narrative scenes, reliefs, saints, or symbols.
A predella is the lower horizontal section of an altarpiece. It often contains a sequence of smaller narrative scenes, saints, donor figures, symbols, or relief carving beneath the principal image.
Etymology
From Italian predella, originally referring to a step or low platform.
Sculptor Notes
Predella scenes are viewed smaller and lower than the main work. Relief depth, figure scale, and narrative clarity therefore need to be simplified and disciplined. The predella should support the visual weight above without becoming a competing miniature exhibition.
