A Renaissance compositional type placing the Virgin and Child together with saints in a unified shared space rather than in separate compartments.
A sacra conversazione places the Virgin and Child with saints in one coherent spatial setting. The figures do not literally converse; the term describes their unified devotional presence rather than the older separation of saints into individual compartments.
Etymology
Italian sacra conversazione, “sacred conversation.”
Sculptor Notes
For sculpture, the principle is especially useful in multi-figure altars and reliefs. Hierarchy must survive unity: Mary and Christ remain the center while saints form a living, spatially integrated company around them.
