The removal of Christ's body from the cross.

Difficulty

Intermediate

Language Origin

Latin / English

Pronunciation

dep-ə-ZISH-ən

The Deposition, or Descent from the Cross, depicts the removal of Christ’s body from the cross. Ladders, the cross itself, Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, the Virgin, Saint John, and attendants commonly structure the scene.

Etymology

From Latin deponere, “to put down” or “to lay aside.”

Sculptor Notes

In sculpture this is a study in suspended weight. Several figures may support a single limp body at different heights, creating diagonals between ladder, arms, torso, and cross. The dead weight of Christ should govern the action of every supporting figure.
