I first met Italian sculptor Edi Carrer in 2024 at the Sylacauga Marble Festival in Alabama. What struck me immediately was his extraordinary command of stone and his ability to carry carving into realms of extreme refinement and fine detail. His work combines technical precision with a thoughtful contemporary sensibility, revealing both a deep respect for material and an exceptional level of craftsmanship. Since that meeting, I have come to know Edi not only as a highly accomplished sculptor, but also as a generous colleague and friend.

Born in 1974 in Pordenone, Italy, Carrer began his artistic journey through painting, graphic art, and drawing before expanding into sculpture in wood, marble, and metal. This foundation in two-dimensional expression helped shape a sculptural language distinguished by precision, sensitivity to form, and an acute awareness of surface and detail.
In 2019, Carrer moved to Pietrasanta, the historic center of marble sculpture in Tuscany, where he continues to develop and create his work in his atelier. Working within a region whose artistic traditions reach back centuries, he brings a contemporary approach to the demanding disciplines of sculpture.
Carrer has participated in international sculpture symposia since 1999, placing his work within a long tradition of artists who develop sculpture through direct engagement with material, place, and fellow sculptors. His exhibition history extends across Italy and internationally, including Japan, Mexico, and Australia. In 2012, he was selected for Sculpture by the Sea in Australia, one of the best-known international outdoor sculpture exhibitions.
His accomplishments include significant monumental public sculptures, among them Flamenco, created for the Principality of Liechtenstein; The Seed of Remembrance, for the University of Udine; and The Airplane, installed in the square of Raccolana in the province of Udine. His sculptures are also represented in public and private collections.
Alongside his artistic practice, Carrer has made an important contribution to the education of younger sculptors. Since 2021, he has served as a tutor in sculpture residencies at the historic Aurisina limestone quarries near Trieste, participating in programs associated with L’Energia dei Luoghi / Festival del Vento e della Pietra. In these programs, he has been recognized as a maestro scultore e tutor — master sculptor and tutor — working closely with emerging artists, including participants associated with the academies and sculpture schools of Venice and Carrara. The 2026 program again identifies him among the master sculptors responsible for mentoring participating artists.
His role in these residencies reflects more than technical proficiency. Carrer brings to teaching the accumulated knowledge of a sculptor who understands stone at a highly refined level: how it responds to the tool, how far detail can be carried, how surfaces can be controlled, and how technical discipline must ultimately remain subordinate to the artistic idea.
His exceptional ability with fine detail is matched by the patience and precision required to communicate that knowledge to another generation of sculptors.
What distinguishes Carrer is not simply his virtuosity, but the judgment underlying it. His work demonstrates that mastery of stone is not measured merely by how much detail the sculptor can achieve, but by understanding when refinement serves the form and when restraint gives the work its greatest strength.
Edi Carrer represents a union of technical mastery, artistic intelligence, international experience, and a sustained commitment to the transmission of sculptural knowledge. His work reminds us that true craftsmanship is not an end in itself, but the means through which the sculptor gives form to an idea.
